About Brooklyn Heights

Brooklyn Heights is organized around a bluff above the East River, and that landform shaped both its street scene and its early growth. The Landmarks Preservation Commission’s 1965 report describes the area as an elevated plateau, bounded on the west by the river and on the north by Fulton Street. It records residential development beginning in the early 19th century, when steam-powered ferries connected the Heights with Manhattan. The historic district was the first designated by the Commission, and the report’s mapped boundary covers most of the traditional neighborhood while excluding its eastern commercial edge.

The district’s architecture is notable for variety within a consistent scale. The LPC report describes brick and brownstone houses along tree-lined streets, with churches, carriage houses, and small mews adding texture. Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Anglo-Italianate, and other 19th-century styles appear across the area. Rather than a set of isolated monuments, the landmark district protects groups of buildings whose aligned cornices, stoops, materials, and heights create a continuous streetscape. The houses on Willow, Hicks, Joralemon, Orange, Pineapple, and Clark Streets are among the smaller residential forms described in the designation record.

Brooklyn Heights also holds a documented place in the City’s abolitionist history. The LPC identifies the Greek Revival house at 70 Willow Street, built in 1839, as associated with abolitionist James Pennington. Plymouth Church and other sites in Brooklyn Heights appear in the Commission’s citywide abolitionist heritage materials. These sources support specific addresses and institutions rather than a generalized claim about every historic building.

For a specific home, compare its block with the mapped district and its documented mix of brick and brownstone houses, carriage houses, and mews. Check the actual entrance, stairs or elevator, street-level uses, and shared areas during a visit; the designation report describes exterior streetscapes rather than conditions inside a unit. The Promenade and BQE are additional geographic references, but proximity should be assessed at the address itself.
