About Bushwick

Bushwick’s public record spans a long transition from rural land to a built-up Brooklyn neighborhood. Brooklyn Community Board 4’s history says the Town of Bushwick was chartered in 1660 and that present-day Bushwick remained rural until the 1850s. The board describes the broader area being mapped and sold for homes in that period, followed by rapid building as Brooklyn grew. Its history is useful context, while Community Board 4’s current city page gives a more practical boundary reference: the district reaches from Flushing Avenue to Broadway, the Queens border, and the Cemetery of the Evergreens. That civic district is the City’s official representation for Bushwick, rather than a claim that every map uses identical neighborhood edges.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission’s Linden Street Historic District shows one small, clearly documented piece of that built history. Designated in 2023, it contains 32 brick and brownstone row houses along Linden Street between Broadway and Bushwick Avenue, built from 1885 to 1901. The designation report attributes their development to Samuel M. Meeker and documents several late-nineteenth-century architectural styles, including Queen Anne, Neo-Grec, Renaissance Revival, and Romanesque Revival. The designation applies to this mapped group of properties; it does not describe all of Bushwick’s buildings.

Public institutions add another timeline. Brooklyn Public Library records that Bushwick Library began in 1903 in a rented church room at Montrose Avenue and Humboldt Street, then moved to its Bushwick Avenue location in 1908. The Washington Irving branch, described by BPL as Brooklyn’s final Carnegie library, has served Bushwick since 1923. Together, the two branch histories show how library service developed through separate locations and generations.

For outdoor recreation, NYC Parks’ maintenance report lists Maria Hernandez Park as a 6.87-acre Brooklyn park with athletic facilities, public restrooms, and playgrounds. The report is a city inventory, not a description of every current condition or program. Read alongside the preservation map and library histories, it offers a grounded way to explore Bushwick through specific civic places and records rather than broad generalizations.
