About Fort Greene

Fort Greene’s public landscape combines an early Brooklyn park with a historic residential district. NYC Parks traces Fort Greene Park to the mid-1840s, when Brooklyn designated a 30-acre site for public use. The grounds had previously been associated with a Revolutionary War fort. The park’s name shifted over time: the City’s urban-forest management plan says Washington Park was renamed Fort Greene Park in 1897, reflecting a name already used locally.

A prominent feature of the park is the Prison Ship Martyrs’ Monument. NYC Parks records that a monument to patriots who died aboard British prison ships during the Revolutionary War was erected in the park in 1908. The surrounding hill and monument give the park a memorial role alongside its public recreation use. The Parks history describes the park as Brooklyn’s first public park, a designation tied to its mid-nineteenth-century creation.

The Fort Greene Historic District documents the architecture beyond the park. A Department of City Planning review says the district encompasses 19 blocks and was designated by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1978. It describes the area’s mid-nineteenth-century architecture through simple brick Italianate, French Second Empire, and Early Romanesque Revival buildings. The same review discusses the adjacent Clinton Hill district separately, so the two designations should not be treated as one boundary or one architectural story.

Together, the park and district records give Fort Greene a clear civic and architectural narrative. The park’s land shifted from fort grounds to public open space and later acquired its memorial. The historic district protects a defined collection of surrounding streets and buildings. Visitors can use the park and landmark maps to explore these histories while keeping the area’s broad neighborhood identity distinct from the official boundaries of individual protected sites.
